Interview with Karoliina Kauhanen, leader of Marketing, Investor Relations and Customer Service
With the world becoming increasingly fast-paced and digital, finding ways to connect and support each other has never been more important. Commu is leading the charge by creating a platform that makes asking for and offering help as simple as a few taps. Whether for individuals, businesses, or municipalities, Commu is revolutionizing how communities engage, one good deed at a time.
What is your core product or service?
“Commu is an app that brings people together through acts of kindness. It allows users to both request and offer help easily, whether at home or in the workplace,” explains Karoliina Kauhanen, who leads Marketing, Investor Relations, and Customer Service at Commu.
The app is free for individuals to download and use, with over 100,000 users across Finland, Germany, and Norway. For businesses, Commu provides a unique way to demonstrate social responsibility through tangible good deeds. “We’ve partnered with companies like Siemens Osakeyhtiö, Framery, Pohjolan Voima, and Hannes Snellman to facilitate thousands of good deeds,” Karoliina adds.
Municipalities also benefit from Commu, which offers a ready-made platform to promote neighborly assistance and community building among residents. “With just a few taps, users can ask for and provide help, which reduces issues like loneliness and supports integration efforts. By January 2025, over 30 municipalities in Finland, as well as locations like Manchester, Barcelona’s suburbs, and Lisbon, will be using our platform,” she shares.
How could Scaleup Launchpad support your company?
“The bigger Commu grows, the greater the positive impact we can create. Scaleup Launchpad is a fantastic way for us to explore new international markets where our app could bring value,” says Karoliina.
Through initiatives like this, Commu aims to uncover new opportunities and projects. “We’re looking for ways to make a difference in places we might not have considered on our own,” she notes.
How familiar are you with the Estonian and Swedish markets or your sector in these countries?
“We’ve received a lot of interest from both users and clients about expanding into Estonia and Sweden. There’s a clear demand for acts of kindness, especially as loneliness in the Baltic region has reached record levels,” Karoliina explains.
Commu already supports Swedish, and an Estonian-language version is on the way. “We want to learn more about how Sweden and Estonia invest in well-being and find ways to make helping and asking for help easier in these regions,” she adds.
What opportunities do you see in these markets through this project?
“We see incredible potential in both markets,” Karoliina shares. “We already work with international companies operating in Sweden and have received many inquiries from Estonia. With Scaleup Launchpad’s help, we hope to respond to these needs and provide a tool that simplifies giving and receiving help.”
Have you had the chance to connect with other companies yet? What are your thoughts on them?
“We’re excited about collaboration,” says Karoliina. “Helping and connecting people is at the core of what Commu does, and we’re open to joint projects that align with our mission of fostering acts of kindness and building stronger communities.”
With its groundbreaking app and a mission to foster acts of kindness, Commu is transforming how communities connect and support each other. The Scaleup Launchpad (powered by Business Tampere) is empowering this innovative Finnish company to expand its positive impact and achieve its ambitious vision on a global scale.
